FALL MORE THAN OTHERS?

Research says if you have a migraine, you fall more often than your counterparts. A study was conducted over 210 women aged between 18 to 55 years. Out of which 105 were migraine patients and 105 were controls. Out of 105 migraine patients who participated in the study, 35 patients had a migraine with aura, 35 patients had a migraine without aura, and 35 patients had a chronic migraine.

The study concluded that those who had migraines experienced more falls and a fear of falling than the controls. In addition, those who had a migraine with aura, and those who had a chronic/ long standing migraine had more falls than those with a migraine without aura. Migraine patients also experience issues such as static balance control deficit, reduction in stability limits, and a reduction in the gate velocity.

*Static balance is the ability to maintain posture.
*Stability limits are the timelines for which you can be stable.
*Gate velocity is the speed in which you can move in a particular posture.
Migraine patients face issues with all the three conditions mentioned above. They find it difficult to stand for a long time, as well as to walk or run due to balance issues and the fear of falling.

The migraine patients who participated in the study expressed their concerns related to falling or the fear of falling in the following situations:
  • Picking things from the ground or above their head
  • Rushing to answer a phone before it stops ringing
  • Walking on a slippery surface
  • Getting in or out of a chair
  • Getting dressed or getting undressed
  • Walking in a crowded place

Physiotherapy reduces the number of falls in migraine patients

The fear of falling may restrict their physical activities which in turn hampers their quality of life, may give rise to disability, depressive symptoms, and invite lifestyle diseases due to a lack of exercise.
The good news is physical therapy can help migraine patients reduce the number of falls as well as the fear of falling according to the medical research.
